Torture in Kalinin colony: nine ‘DPR employees’ charged with crimes against prisoners

Under the procedural guidance of the Prosecutor General’s Office, nine citizens of Ukraine were officially notified of the suspicion of ill-treatment of prisoners of war under Part 1 of Art. 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
According to the data investigations, the suspects held pseudo-positions of inspectors and on-duty assistants in the so-called “Kalinin Correctional Colony” under the control of the occupation administration “DNR”. This colony was created in 2014 on the basis of the former Ukrainian correctional colony No. 27 in the city of Horlivka, after the occupation of the region. Since then, the colony has been used for the illegal detention of persons convicted by the so-called “DNR” judicial authorities.
With the beginning of the large-scale invasion on February 24, 2022 and during the fighting for Mariupol, a number of Ukrainian servicemen were captured by Russian and pro-Russian formations. Among the places where they were taken was the Kalinin Correctional Colony.
According to the testimony, the suspects systematically used physical and psychological violence against the prisoners, starting from the moment of their arrival. They resorted to cruel treatment of the soldiers of the Armed Forces, violating their rights and humiliating their honor and dignity.
The pre-trial investigation in this case is conducted by the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine.
