Ukraine announces reform of six national nature parks

The State Agency of Forest Resources of Ukraine is continuing a large-scale reform of national parks by identifying specific areas of development for six key sites in the nature reserve fund. The head of the agency, Viktor Smal, announced this on his Facebook page.

“During a working meeting with the heads of the Boykivshchyna, Shatsk, Skole Beskydy, Halych, Mala Polissya, and Zacharovanyi Krai national nature parks, we outlined the priority areas of activity for the coming months and next year. The regional peculiarities of each national park were taken into account,” Smal said.

In the short term, the focus will be on standardising production processes in the parks, developing recreational infrastructure and actively cooperating with international organisations to attract additional financial resources. It is also planned to create modern stands, guidebooks, update information materials and park websites, and upgrade ecological trails.

Long-term plans include the legal registration of land plots, buildings and structures that are in permanent use by the parks, the development of forestry materials and organisational projects, the construction of recreational facilities, the reconstruction of forestry and greenhouses for growing decorative material.

According to Smal, the implementation of these measures will bring the activities of national nature parks in line with European standards and strengthen their financial self-sufficiency.

In a month and a half, it is planned to hear reports from the directors of the national parks on the results of the planned tasks.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved a change in the designated purpose of 3.6 thousand hectares of forests for their further transfer to the Nobel National Park, which will be part of the overall reform of the country’s environmental protection sector.
