Ukraine named the optimal format of a special tribunal to hold the Russian Federation accountable

The creation of a special tribunal based on a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe is considered the most promising format for bringing Russia to justice. This was announced by the ambassador on special assignment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Anton Korynevich, in a comment to Ukrinform in The Hague.
Korynevich noted that the format of the tribunal, based on the agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe, is the most realistic and should be further developed.
“We came to the conclusion that the format of creating a tribunal based on a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe is the most promising and the one that should be followed and, in fact, developed in the future. Therefore, the Core Group continues to work, so we will definitely have meetings of this end of the year”, he emphasized, noting that additional meetings are planned until the end of the year.
The diplomat also reported that discussions are already underway regarding the procedure for electing judges and the formation of the judicial corps, which will be prescribed in the founding documents, in particular, in the statute of the tribunal.
“And we are also currently working on the development of relevant documents, in particular.” Korynevich noted.
The September meeting of the Core Group, which took place in Vienna, was assessed as positive by all participants. As a result of this meeting, an agreement was reached on the general concept of the tribunal, and the participants proceeded to discuss the draft Statute.
We will remind that at the end of June, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution that provides for the creation of a special tribunal to consider the crimes of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
