Ukraine once again became the first in the world in terms of the stability of the fixed Internet — for the second year in a row, our country leads the Digital Quality of Life Index 2024 rating. About reported Ministry of Digital Transformation, stressing that in wartime this achievement has a special value.
The Digital Quality of Life Index rating evaluates the quality of digital services in different countries, including the speed, availability and reliability of the Internet. Ukraine won the first place thanks to the development of modern xPON technology, which provides communication even during a complete power outage. This system can operate continuously for up to 72 hours without power, allowing citizens to stay connected during blackouts caused by strikes on critical infrastructure.
According to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, in a few years Ukraine has become the world leader in the number of connections to xPON. If only 30% of Ukrainians used this technology in 2021, it is planned to reach 65% already this year.
“The Russian Federation destroys critical infrastructure every day, and our goal is for every settlement to be connected to xPON. A person should be able to call emergency services or write to relatives at any time.” – the ministry emphasizes.
To scale the technology across the country, the Ministry of Digital, together with partners, is implementing a number of initiatives:
- an interactive map of providers working with xPON was created in cooperation with LUN City;
- work continues on the reservation mechanism for Internet providers to speed up the connection and restoration of damaged networks;
- an educational series about xPON technology has been launched on the Diya.Osvita platform, so that anyone who wants to can learn how it works;
- the state provides support to providers who are actively developing the xPON network.
At the same time, Ukraine continues to develop mobile Internet and implements other digital projects to ensure reliable communication in any corner of the country.
