Xi Jinping urged Putin to reach a ‘fair’ peace agreement regarding Ukraine.

During the meeting with Vladimir Putin, the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, called on the Russian President to conclude a “fair”, “sustainable” and “legally binding” peace agreement regarding Ukraine. informs Bloomberg.

This is the first time that the Chinese leader has personally voiced to Putin the principles on which, in his opinion, the war can be ended. During a tea party in the Kremlin, the parties exchanged views on the “Ukrainian crisis”. Xi Jinping stated the need to “take into account the legitimate interests of all countries in the field of security and eliminate the root causes of the crisis in Ukraine.”

According to Xi, China supports any efforts to achieve peace and hopes that it will be achieved “through dialogue on the basis of a fair, long-term and legally binding peace agreement acceptable to all parties concerned.”

In response, Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to start peace talks without preconditions and expressed hope for a fair peace agreement. The Chinese leader’s rhetoric echoes a statement made by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in March, in which he said that Moscow and Kyiv “hope to conclude a fair and sustainable peace agreement.” At the same time, Xi Jinping personally did not make such statements before this.

The talks between Putin and Xi in the tête-à-tête format took place during a tea party in the afternoon the day before. The Kremlin did not disclose the content of the conversations. The day before, the aide to the President of the Russian Federation, Yuriy Ushakov, reported that the meeting was planned to discuss “all the most important, key issues of strategic cooperation between our countries and, of course, the most delicate and sensitive issues.”
