Meta steps up fight against spam on Facebook

Meta company announced on strengthening anti-spam measures on the Facebook platform. The company is beginning to react more seriously to attempts to manipulate algorithms, in particular through the publication of long posts with a large number of hashtags.

The platform will take action against accounts that post non-image captions. In cases where such posts are detected, Meta will limit the reach of the content to only the followers of the account, and payments for these posts will be stopped.

As an example, Meta cites a post with a photo of a dog and the caption “Top 10 #FACTS ABOUT PLANES,” which has nothing to do with the image. Another example is a long text about the benefits of cars, supplemented with hashtags like “#VIRALCONTENT”, “#LIKEFORLIKE”, “#BOOST”.

The company will also disable monetization of accounts that create or control hundreds of pages to mass distribute the same content. As explained in Meta, most such accounts are aimed at artificially increasing followers and views, which provides “unfair monetization”.

Another direction is the fight against fake activity in comments. Meta plans to reduce the visibility of comments that the system recognizes as part of coordinated manipulation attempts. In addition, the company is testing a tool that will allow users to complain about such comments, as well as introducing additional moderation features that will allow you to hide comments from users who may be impersonating others.

“Spam can prevent people from expressing their opinions, regardless of their views, so we focus on behavior that manipulates the distribution and monetization of content.” – the company explained.
