Duty-free trade with Ukraine: the EU strengthens protective mechanisms

Permanent representatives of the EU member states confirmed the continuation of duty-free trade with Ukraine, but with two protective mechanisms to protect the European market.

About this it is said in the message of the Council of the EU.

The first mechanism:

Strengthening of existing restrictions based on monitoring by the European Commission.

The second mechanism:

  • The European Commission is obliged to re-introduce tariff quotas for imports from Ukraine:
  • poultry meat
  • eggs
  • sugar
  • oats
  • corn
  • croup
  • honey

Quotas are introduced if the volume of exports exceeds the average value for the years 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The mechanism starts automatically 14 days after the detected excess. Takes into account data on imports for the year 2021.

Expected:

  • On April 9, the specialized committee of the European Parliament will approve the new conditions.
  • By the end of April, the plenary session of the European Parliament will approve the new conditions.

The EU Council will adopt the regulation.

  • On June 6, the regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
  • The regulation will enter into force on June 6.
