Zelensky explains why Ukraine needs multiple citizenship

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed support for the introduction of multiple citizenship for Ukrainians who have received passports in EU countries or countries that are close partners of Ukraine. He made the statement during a meeting with the heads of territorial communities and districts of Zakarpattia region.
‘I support the idea of dual, or rather multiple, citizenship. This opportunity will be available only to certain countries – the EU and our close partners. This will help people who have received documents abroad because of the war. It is important for us that they do not completely change their citizenship after receiving documents there. Even if the children studied there and graduated from university, so that they do not completely lose touch with Ukraine,’ Zelensky said.
Earlier, the President submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill regulating the issue of multiple citizenship. The document establishes the basic principles of citizenship, including the grounds for its loss, for example, in the case of obtaining the citizenship of the aggressor country.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are currently up to 7.5 million Ukrainians living abroad, for whom the issue of multiple citizenship is particularly relevant, as it will allow them to maintain cultural, economic and social ties with Ukraine even if they are permanently residing in other countries.
