BYD overtakes Tesla for the first time in the number of electric cars sold in the EU

The Chinese car manufacturer BYD has for the first time overtaken the American Tesla in terms of the number of electric cars sold in Europe. This achievement is already regarded as an important change in the balance of power in the European automotive market, informs Bloomberg.
According to data from the analytical company Jato Dynamics, in April BYD sold 7,231 new electric cars in Europe — 169% more than in the same period last year. This result allowed the Chinese brand to enter the top ten leaders in sales of electric cars in the region for the first time. At the same time, Tesla’s sales for the month fell by 49%.
Taking into account hybrid models, BYD’s advantage is even more noticeable – the company’s total sales increased by 359%. The unchanged leader of the electric car market in Europe remains Volkswagen, which showed a growth of 61%. Czech Škoda tripled its sales volume and took third place in the April ranking after BMW.
The most popular electric car in Europe last month was the Skoda Elroq — almost 8,000 cars were sold. At the same time, Renault Clio held the overall lead among all models with the result of 19,000 cars sold. This is the model’s first lead since June 2020. Previously, Clio was inferior to the budget rival Dacia Sandero, which became the most popular car in Europe in 2024.
