Hungarian Foreign Minister expresses outrage over US sanctions against Russia’s Gazprombank

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the US sanctions against Russia’s Gazprombank a threat to the energy security of the countries of Central Europe, saying that it is an “attack on Hungary’s sovereignty”. This is reported Bloomberg.

Szijarto noted that the sanctions create risks for the stable supply of energy carriers, and that is why Hungary is discussing the situation with the energy ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria and Serbia.

“Hungary is grateful to Turkey, Bulgaria and Serbia for providing a very safe, very reliable and very stable transit”, – emphasized the Hungarian minister.

Hungary remains among the few EU countries, including Slovakia and Austria, that continue to depend on Russian gas. Settlements for supplies are made through Gazprombank, which has come under sanctions. If the supply of Russian gas is stopped, competition for energy resources on the world market may increase, which will cause an increase in gas prices and affect European consumers.

It was previously reported that Russia promised Hungary additional volumes of cheap gas as a sign of gratitude for Budapest blocking European aid to Ukraine. In October, the Hungarian government signed a new long-term agreement with Gazprom to supply gas at a “competitive price.”
