Hungary blocks 2 billion euros of aid to Ukraine

Hungary has announced its intention to block the allocation of 2 billion euros of aid to Ukraine by the European Union. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, the reason for this decision was the “witch hunt” that Ukraine allegedly launched against Hungarian companies.

Specifically, Hungary has claims against Ukraine due to:

  • Removal of OTP Bank from the list of war sponsors: OTP Bank was removed from the list after it became known that it continued to operate in Russia.
  • “Prosecution” of the pharmaceutical company Gedeon Richter: Hungary claims that Gedeon Richter is being “groundlessly prosecuted” on “fabricated pretexts”.
  • Hungary has said that it will not agree to unlock a 500 million euro tranche under the European Peace Framework program and will prevent Brussels’ intention to send another 1.5 billion euros to Ukraine until Ukraine guarantees the unhindered work of Hungarian companies.
