Hungary plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced his intention to run for the post of UN Secretary General, which will become vacant in 2026. That’s what he’s about reported during a speech at the Argentine Council on International Relations (CARI).

“The process of selecting a successor to Guterres (the current UN Secretary General) has not yet started. It will start at the end of this year, when the UN General Assembly will publish a corresponding call for nominations.” Grossi noted.

Regarding his own participation in the elections, he confirmed that he is seriously considering the possibility of submitting his candidacy.

“That’s all I can say for now,” he added.

In his speech, Grossi also criticized the work of the UN Security Council, pointing to its inability to act effectively:

“This cannot go forward. I believe that international decision-makers should work with the reality that they have, not the reality that should be. If we had a Security Council that worked perfectly, we obviously wouldn’t have the conflicts that we have.”.

We will remind that Rafael Mariano Grossi is an Argentine diplomat who heads the IAEA since December 3, 2019. Prior to that, he was the ambassador of Argentina to Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia and representative to international organizations in Vienna (2013–2019). In 2023, he was re-elected to the post of Director General of the IAEA.
