In California, the collection of signatures for secession from the United States began

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber has approved the initiative to hold a Calexit referendum, which will put before voters the question of California’s withdrawal from the United States. About this informs website of the California Secretary of State.

According to the report, the collection of signatures in support of this initiative has begun. If enough signatures are collected, the issue of California independence will be put on the ballot in 2028.

In the referendum, voters will be asked to answer the question: “Should California leave the United States and become an independent state?” In order to make a decision, a turnout of at least 50% of registered voters is required, and at least 55% of them, or more than 500,000 people, support independence by July 22.

The press service of the Secretary of State of California emphasized that supporting this initiative would be a “vote of no confidence in the United States” and would symbolize the desire of Californians for independence, although this would not involve an immediate change of the state government or its relations with the United States.

According to preliminary calculations, the Calexit initiative will cost the state at least $10 million, and the annual maintenance of the corresponding commission will require $2 million. The idea for the branch belongs to a political activist from Fresno, Marcus Evans, who tried to push a similar initiative back in 2016 during the first term of the presidency of Donald Trump.
