In Ukraine, it is planned to exclude Russian and Belarusian from the list of languages protected by law

In Ukraine, they plan to change the official term “minority languages” to “minority languages” and exclude Russian and Belarusian languages from the list of languages subject to protection under the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages. Such changes are provided for by the existing draft law approved Cabinet.

The authors of the document suggest updating the official translation of the text of the Charter and adapting Ukrainian legislation to modern needs. In particular, it is planned to rename the law “On Ratification of the European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages” to “European Charter of Regional or Minority Languages”. At the same time, the list of languages covered by this document will be adjusted.

The new list will include Bulgarian, Gagauz, Crimean Tatar, Modern Greek, German, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Hungarian, Czech and Hebrew. These languages will continue to receive support and protection under the provisions of the Charter.

Russian and Belarusian languages are planned to be excluded from this list, as they are no longer considered to be in need of special protection in Ukraine. The Moldovan language will also be removed from the list, as it is officially recognized as Romanian in Moldova.
