In Ukraine, more than 17% of water samples from bathing places do not meet the standards: data from the Ministry of Health

According to the agency, ingestion of Escherichia coli can cause intestinal infections.

According to the results of water quality research in reservoirs and rivers on beaches across the country, an excess of Escherichia coli was recorded. About this informs Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

In particular, as of July 5, of the 1,056 water samples taken from surface reservoirs, more than 17% did not meet sanitary standards. In particular, the specialists found an excess of the LKP index (lactose-positive Escherichia coli).

The danger of Escherichia coli

At the same time, the department reports that Escherichia coli can cause intestinal infections (the most common symptoms: nausea and diarrhea), inflammation of the urinary tract and genitals, as well as more serious diseases when it enters the body.

Symptoms of an acute intestinal infection that require immediate medical attention:

  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Fever accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pains
  • Little or no urination

“Regardless of whether swimming is officially allowed or not, in recreation areas on rivers and reservoirs of Ukraine, specialists of regional control and prevention centers monitor water quality every week: they take samples for laboratory testing and establish the excess of indicators that are potentially dangerous for the population,” – it is noted in the message of the Ministry of Health.
