July 14: holidays and events on this day

July 14 is celebrated as the Day of Chaos and Disorder (Pillar Day), the International Day of Non-Binary People.

Day of Chaos and Disorder (Pillar Day)

On July 14, the world celebrates Pandemonium Day, or the Day of Pillars. The term “Pandemonium” has been known since biblical times, but it became popular only in the 17th century thanks to the poem “Paradise Lost” by the English poet John Milton. The author used a plot from the Bible, naming with this word the mansions of the fallen angel thrown from Heaven, who personifies the forces of Evil. Literally, “pandemonium” is translated from Latin as column formation, confusion and disorder. The establishment of such a holiday is interpreted ambiguously, and different meanings are attached to the explanation of its meaning. On the one hand, a holiday dedicated to chaos can cause tension. On the other hand, turning to the topic of chaos refers us to ancient theories of the origin of the world, created from this very chaos or from nothing. The same theory is also the basis of the Christian creed, which says that God created the world out of chaos.

In the complex modern world, full of stress and everyday worries, it can be difficult for a person to follow an orderly lifestyle and keep his home in order. Sometimes the mess gets out of control, causing additional mental discomfort. The organizers of the holiday offer to remind that the mess is an opportunity to take a step towards something new. In everyday life, the mess can become an opportunity to organize the surrounding world in a new way, making it even better. It is suggested to carry out a general cleaning on this day, get rid of unnecessary things and put your thoughts in order.

International Non-Binary People’s Day has been celebrated since 2012 on July 14. Non-binary gender identity refers to an awareness of oneself outside the boundaries of the traditional division of the sexes into male and female. Non-binary individuals can have multiple genders or none at all (agenderism). Gender is not related to sexual orientation and androgyny. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to the issues faced by non-binary people, to raise awareness about genderqueer and to overcome discrimination. The first person in the US to receive legal recognition of a non-binary gender was James Shupe in 2016. A similar practice began in Australia back in 2003, when Alex McFarlane received the status of an intersex person.
