Switzerland supports peace initiative of China and Brazil

Switzerland expressed support for the peace initiative proposed by China and Brazil regarding Ukraine, even though this document does not mention the UN Charter and the issue of Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This was announced by the spokesman of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Nicolas Bideau.

Bideau explained that Switzerland supports the initiative, as it calls for a cessation of hostilities and a political solution to the conflict, and also offers an alternative to the harsh statements that were heard at the UN from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.

At the same time, the representative of the Swiss Foreign Ministry emphasized that any peace initiatives regarding Ukraine must take into account the UN Charter. He emphasized that this was mentioned in the speech of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the meeting of the UN Security Council.

Switzerland, which hosted the first Global Summit based on the Ukrainian “peace formula” in June, was one of the few Western countries that took part in the meeting on the Sino-Brazilian initiative organized on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 27.

It will be recalled that Hungary also expressed support for this initiative among European states.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously described the Chinese-Brazilian proposal as “destructive” because it was developed without consultations with Ukraine.

The chief diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell, also criticized this “peace plan”, noting that its authors think in terms of surrender when talking about peace.
