More than 400 representatives of Hollywood appealed to US President Donald Trump not to cancel copyright protection at the request of companies engaged in the development of artificial intelligence. This is stated in the open letter of the artists to the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the White House, informs Variety.
Among the signatories are directors, writers, actors, musicians and other figures, including Ben Stiller, Mark Ruffalo, Cynthia Erivo, Cate Blanchett, Cord Jefferson, Paul McCartney, Ron Howard and Taika Waititi.
The letter was a response to recent appeals by OpenAI and Google to the Office of Science and Technology Policy. They argued that existing US copyright law should allow AI companies to train their models on copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holders or compensation.
“We strongly believe that America’s world leadership in AI should not come at the expense of our vital creative industries.” – says the letter.
AI companies seek to undermine this economic and cultural power by weakening copyright protections for films, television series, artwork, written works, music and voices used to train AI models, the artists said.
