The Institute of National Memory provided statistics on the number of renamed toponyms

As part of decommunization in Ukraine this year, more than 25,000 geographical names were renamed and 1,066 monuments and signs were dismantled. About this reported head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINP) Anton Drobovych.

He noted that the full-scale invasion of Russia became a catalyst for Ukrainians’ desire to get rid of everything associated with the imperial past.

“We received data from regional administrations about the first year of implementation of the law on decommunization. At least 25,194 toponymy objects were renamed as part of the implementation of this law during this year, and at least 1,066 monuments and signs were dismantled.” – emphasized the official.

The UINP also participated in the development of a draft law that provides for the renaming of settlements in the temporarily occupied Crimea. According to the document, it is planned to change the names of more than 600 geographical objects. Some of them will be decommunized, and others will be given back their historical names, Drobovych clarified. These changes are part of a nationwide strategy to assert historical truth and strengthen identity, aimed at overcoming imperial influence in Ukraine.
