The Ministry of Internal Affairs has created an electronic map with data on criminal cases related to the Holodomor

To the Day of Remembrance of the Holodomor Victims, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine presented an electronic map containing more than two thousand documented cases of cannibalism during the Holodomor of 1932-1933.

The map posted on the portal of the Ministry of Internal Affairs shows the geography of these tragic cases recorded by the Soviet penal authorities. In cooperation with the Holodomor Museum, archival documents were digitized, and specialists of the Ministry of Internal Affairs developed an interactive resource that demonstrates the scale and horror of the genocide directed against Ukrainians by the communist regime.

During the opening of the event, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Inna Yashchuk emphasized the historical parallel: in the twentieth century, in the center of Europe, the Stalinist regime tried to destroy the Ukrainian people, and today, in the twenty-first century, Ukraine is once again experiencing the horrors of war, fighting for its identity and sovereignty. She also noted that the National Police is making significant efforts to document Russian war crimes.

As part of the project, 1,022 criminal cases of cannibalism were digitized in 2023, and this year information was added on more than 1,000 cases that remained on the selective lists after the archives were destroyed in 1956. In total, data on almost 2,050 tragic events are plotted on the map.

According to representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, interest in the truth about the Holodomor, in particular the topic of cannibalism, is confirmed by the considerable attention paid to the documentary by journalist Akim Galimov, created in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This episode of “Real Story” has already been watched by more than one million users on YouTube and was also broadcast on national television.

Andriy Zagorulko, head of the analytical department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ communication department, presented a special thematic section of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ portal dedicated to the Holodomor to the participants of the event. He noted that data on cases of cannibalism, obtained from testimonies published in the volume of the National Holodomor Memorial Book for the Kyiv region, were added to the Holodomor map.

According to Zagorulka, these testimonies made it possible to carry out additional verification of historical materials, as well as to identify cases that were overlooked by criminal authorities and were not previously documented. This supplemented the overall picture of the tragedy with new, previously unknown facts.
