The Pension Fund announced a sharp reduction in the number of pensioners in Ukraine
By the end of 2024, the number of Ukrainian pensioners will decrease to less than 10 million people.

Since 2017, the number of pensioners in Ukraine has decreased by almost 2 million people, and since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation – by 687 thousand. Such rates will lead to the fact that already this year the number of pensioners will decrease to less than 10 million people for the first time in the entire history of Ukraine’s independence. Such statistical data stated in the Pension Fund of Ukraine (PFU).
According to data as of January 1, 2022, there were 10 million 841 thousand pensioners in Ukraine. During the full-scale invasion, until April 2024, the number of pensioners decreased to 10 million 154 thousand pensioners. Thus, during the war, the number of pensioners decreased by 24,500 people every month.
In general, over the course of 28 months, there were 687,000 fewer pensioners in Ukraine. Before the start of the war, in the period from January 2020 to January 2022, their number decreased by 493 thousand people. That is, before the Russian invasion, there were 20,500 fewer people every month.
However, since the beginning of the war, the number of pensioners has not changed significantly. Experts have already named a list of reasons that contributed to such a reduction. Including:
- the requirements for receiving a pension increase every year. Over time, to be able to receive a pension from the age of 60, you need to have 35 years of experience. Such a requirement in 2017 was only 25 years;
- occupation and rising mortality. A full-scale invasion caused significant casualties among the population. The Russian army destroys entire cities. In addition, the increase in mortality is facilitated by a decrease in the level of income and a difficult psychological situation.
- refugees. Despite the fact that a large part of the refugees are young Ukrainian women, among the almost 5 million refugees there are pensioners and those who should have received pensioner status already during the war.
