The Swiss parliament refused to allocate more than 5 billion dollars for aid to Ukraine

The upper house of the Swiss parliament rejected a proposal to allocate financial aid to Ukraine in the amount of 5 billion Swiss francs (5.58 billion US dollars). These funds were to be used to restore infrastructure damaged by Russian shelling.

This was reported by the publication Reuters.

The proposal was to create a special fund to finance the Swiss army and rebuild Ukraine. It was proposed to allocate 5 billion francs to our country, and it was planned to allocate 10.1 billion francs (about 11 billion dollars) to the additional needs of the Swiss armed forces in 2025-2030.

The reason for the refusal was the non-compliance of the plan with the restrictions on borrowing in a neutral country. Lawmakers said the aid package violated Switzerland’s “debt brake” provisions.

The decision was made two weeks before a high-level summit that the Swiss government plans to hold to promote peace in Ukraine.

Western allies continue to put pressure on Switzerland, demanding more support for Ukraine from the country.
