Ukraine cuts electricity imports by 58% in October

In October 2024, the volume of electricity imports to Ukraine decreased by 58%, amounting to 181 thousand MWh. This is evidenced by ExPro Electricity monitoring.

The largest share of electricity came from Hungary – 32.8% of total imports, followed by Slovakia and Romania with shares of 25.4% and 24.8%, respectively. The most significant decline was recorded in supplies from Poland, where volumes fell by 77%.

According to the data, electricity imports grew in the first half of 2024, reaching their maximum in June. However, this figure began to decline gradually in July, and in October, imports were significantly lower than in the peak months.

Although imports declined in October, they remained 9.5 times higher than in the same period in 2023.

In September, Ukraine also reduced electricity imports by 7.5% compared to August, to 438 thousand MWh, with Hungary remaining the main supplier.

Due to the shortage of generation caused by Russian missile attacks, Ukraine will have to spend $800 million on electricity imports.

According to ExPro, June 2024 was the peak month for electricity imports, with more than 858 thousand MWh. The largest imports were carried out by state-owned trader Energy Company of Ukraine (ECU) in May, which exceeded April’s figures by a third and was twice as much as in March.
