Ukraine must “find a solution” to the Volyn tragedy, otherwise Poland will take tough measures: Sikorsky

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslav Sikorsky, called on Ukraine to exhume the victims of the Volyn tragedy. He stated this in interview the French publication Le Monde.
Sikorsky announced that on September 13 he will visit Kyiv, where he plans to meet with his Ukrainian colleague and representatives of the Orthodox clergy. One of the main issues of the meeting will be commemoration of the victims of the Volyn tragedy.
“What happened in 1943 during the German occupation of Poland and Ukraine was a plan of the Ukrainian (movement – Ed.) resistance (to carry out – Ed.) ethnic cleansing of the Volyn region through the mass murder of the Polish civilian population.”, – said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He specified that between 80,000 and 120,000 people were killed in a few months. At the same time, Sikorsky admitted that there were cases of revenge by the Polish resistance movement.
Sikorskyi also noted that Poland has already overcome its “imperial syndrome” regarding Ukraine, but has one request: to exhume the victims of the Volyn tragedy for their proper burial according to Christian traditions.
The minister emphasized the need to reach an understanding on this issue, explaining that it is important to find a solution before Poland is forced to resort to tougher measures.
“Our public is very excited about this. Then the surviving Poles were deported to Poland, and their descendants now represent millions of people for whom this issue is important and who vote,” added the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry.
