Ukraine plans to change the validity period of driver’s licenses

In Ukraine, they plan to change the validity period of driver’s licenses – the Cabinet of Ministers proposed a corresponding initiative. Bill №8082 has already been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for consideration. Its main purpose is to limit the validity period of driver’s licenses depending on the type of vehicle, with a maximum term of 15 years.
The changes will affect not only new certificates, but also documents that were issued earlier. In particular, drivers who received permanent licenses before 2011 will have to go through the re-registration procedure after the law comes into force. The term of validity of the driver’s license will depend on the category of the vehicle and will be from 10 to 15 years.
For those who repeatedly violated the rules of the road, repeated passing of the test – both theoretical and practical – is provided. Such checks will become mandatory to confirm the appropriate level of driver training.
The proposed changes are part of a broader reform aimed at integrating Ukrainian legislation with European Union standards. In many EU countries, a similar system of periodic renewal of certificates has been in place for a long time. According to experts, this approach can reduce the number of traffic accidents and increase discipline on the roads.
Experts recommend that Ukrainian drivers carefully monitor the process of consideration of the draft law and prepare in advance for the possible need to reissue documents. After the adoption of the law, the detailed procedure will be published on the official websites of the Verkhovna Rada and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
