Ukrainian nuclear power plants had to reduce electricity production due to Russian strikes

Ukraine’s three operating nuclear power plants were forced to reduce electricity production after repeated Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, which increased the risks to the country’s nuclear security during the war. This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

According to him, for the second time in two weeks, the Khmelnytsky, Rivne, and South Ukrainian NPPs reduced their capacity as part of precautionary measures related to large-scale military operations in Ukraine.

At nine reactors of these stations, the level of energy production was reduced, and one of the reactors of the Rivne NPP was completely disconnected from the network. Despite the loss of Khmelnytsky NPP’s connection to two power transmission lines, the stations continue to receive electricity from other sources.

“Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is extremely fragile and vulnerable, which puts nuclear security at great risk. I once again call for maximum military restraint in areas where the main nuclear power facilities and other facilities on which they depend are located.”, – emphasized the director of the IAEA.
