UNICEF continues to support Ukrainian children: 100 more schools will receive assistance to prepare for winter

War brings incredible challenges and suffering, especially for children. In such conditions, providing adequate support becomes not only a matter of humanity, but also an investment in the future generation. Providing a safe and comfortable environment for learning is one of the key goals that helps children maintain stability and hope even in the most difficult times. The UNICEF organization is one of the main partners helping Ukrainian schools to adapt to the difficult circumstances of the winter of 2024-2025. Thanks to their initiative, another 100 schools will receive financial assistance to prepare for the winter season.

Support program details

Each of the schools selected to participate in the program will receive one-time assistance in the amount of 290,500 hryvnias. About this informs Ministry of National Unity of Ukraine.

These funds can be directed to:

  • repair of school infrastructure;
  • purchase, transportation and storage of heating materials;
  • modernization of canteens, including their repair.

Special attention is paid to the modernization of school canteens, for which up to 83,000 hryvnias have been allocated from the total amount of funding. This will not only ensure thermal comfort in the premises, but also improve the quality of schoolchildren’s nutrition, which is an important aspect of their health and well-being.

The project is being implemented with the support of Olena Zelenska within the framework of school nutrition reform. This is the result of cooperation between UNICEF, the Ministry of National Unity of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the Office of the President of Ukraine. Financial support was provided by the Norwegian government, which underlines the importance of international solidarity in solving urgent problems.

School selection criteria

Educational institutions meeting the following criteria were selected for the program:

  1. Schools located in the front-line areas with more than 200 students.
  2. Institutions where at least 50 internally displaced children study.

This approach makes it possible to focus efforts on the most vulnerable communities and provide children with access to quality education even in conditions of proximity to the war zone.

The new grant package adds to the list of 700 schools that already received financial support under this program in October. This shows the significant scale of the initiative, which gradually covers more and more educational institutions, strengthening their resilience to the challenges of wartime.

For more detailed information about the program or to receive consultations, UNICEF suggests contacting the “Tell it as it is” hotline at 0 800 600 017. Calls are accepted from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00.

UNICEF’s assistance in preparing Ukrainian schools for the winter period is an important contribution to ensuring access to quality education in wartime conditions. Thanks to this initiative, children will be able to continue their studies in a safe and comfortable environment, which is extremely important for their physical, emotional and educational development. This project is an example of how international cooperation can bring real changes in the lives of those who need it most.
