Zaporizhzhya NPP under the threat of blackout

The occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (ZAP) was again on the verge of blackout due to enemy shelling. About this reported Ministry of Energy of Ukraine. One of the two power supply lines of the station was de-energized, and currently the ZNPP is connected to the power system by only one line. Specialists are already working on restoring the damaged line. The water level in the cooling pond is 14.13 meters, which is sufficient to meet the station’s needs.

In general, as of November 16, 2024, the energy system of Ukraine remains balanced, the Ministry of Energy says, although damage to the infrastructure complicates its functioning. Energy workers have restored power supply to more than 16,000 consumers who were cut off as a result of hostilities. Consumers are urged to use electricity wisely, especially during the evening hours of 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM to maintain system stability.

For the current day, the import of electricity from Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Moldova with a total volume of 5828 MW*h and a capacity of 705 MW is forecast.

We will remind that the ZANP, located near the city of Energodar in the Zaporizhia region, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. On March 4, 2022, the station was captured by Russian troops. Since then, the ZNPP has repeatedly come under fire, which has resulted in infrastructure damage and threats to nuclear safety. In particular, on October 21, 2024, due to systematic shelling, one of the two power transmission lines connecting the station to the unified energy system of Ukraine was disconnected. At that time, the station was powered by only one line, which created the risk of a complete blackout.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has repeatedly emphasized the critical situation at the ZNPP and called on the international community to take measures to ensure the station’s safety.
