In Kharkiv, more than 1,000 children will go to metro kindergarten

In Kharkiv, a city that is in a zone of increased risk due to hostilities, a decision was made to organize preschool education for children. This year, about 1,000 Kharkiv children will go to kindergartens located in the metro, as well as to an underground school. Such a step is forced and dictated by the safety of children in the current conditions.

Education for children will begin in the second half of September, and this is a significant event for the city, which is adapting to new realities. According to information provided by Olga Demenko, head of the city’s education department, the educational process for Kharkiv preschoolers will take place at six metro stations, as well as in a specially equipped underground school located in the Industrial district. Preparations for the new school year are already actively underway, and all necessary measures to ensure a safe and comfortable stay of children in underground conditions are being carefully worked out.

Experience of previous classes in underground kindergartens

From the beginning of 2024 until the month of July, underground kindergartens were already functioning in Kharkiv, attended by 760 children aged 5 to 6 years. Classes were held in 16 rooms located at five metro stations, where special classes of the metro school were created. Children came to class once a week, usually on weekends, which facilitated their socialization and ensured minimal security.

The program of classes in underground conditions was developed taking into account the age characteristics of children. It is aimed exclusively at preschoolers, as children aged 3-4 years need special conditions, such as regular sleep and feeding every 3-4 hours, which currently cannot be provided in the metro. Thus, the program focuses on older preschoolers, for whom the learning conditions can be maximally adapted to the specifics of the underground space.

New academic year and expansion of the program

This academic year, a significant expansion of the underground education program is planned. It is expected that about 1,000 children who will attend kindergartens in the metro and an underground school will join her. This decision was made in connection with the need to ensure the safety of children in the current conditions, because the subway provides the best protection against possible shelling.

Classes in metro kindergartens will be held in two shifts:

  • from 10:00 to 12:00;
  • from 14:00 to 16:00.

This schedule allows you to optimally allocate time for different groups of children and provide them with enough time for activities and rest. All classrooms are equipped according to the needs of children, provided with everything necessary for educational games, lessons and activities.

How to enroll a child in an underground kindergarten

Parents who want their child to attend kindergarten in the metro should contact the management of their preschool. Heads of kindergartens, in turn, have all the necessary instructions on the registration procedure and are ready to provide all the necessary information to parents.

It is important to note that the decision to attend an underground kindergarten is voluntary, and parents can choose for themselves whether they want their children to be in this educational format. Nevertheless, given the security situation, more and more families are choosing this option for their children.

Studying in underground kindergartens and schools has become a forced but necessary measure to ensure the safety of children in Kharkiv. Thanks to such measures, the city authorities demonstrate their readiness to adapt to new conditions and provide children with access to education even in emergency situations. Although conditions in the subway cannot replace traditional schools and kindergartens, they provide an opportunity for children to continue learning and socialization, which is extremely important in the current circumstances.
