Children of war

Lithuanians will help build “schools of the future” in Ukraine

Despite the fact that the end of the war still looks like a vague prospect, the reconstruction of Ukraine continues. Part of the work in this direction is carried out with the support of international partners. For example, the Central Project Management Agency of Lithuania has even created a separate division that will specialize in the restoration of our country – “Co-create Future of Ukraine”. Currently, this unit is focused on the creation of the architectural project “schools of the future”.

The “school of the future” project

As part of the initiative “Future School for Ukraine” a competition for teams of architects has been announced. Participants present their vision of schools to be built in Ukraine. The projects of the winners will be implemented. It is about the creation of several typical, but adaptive projects for the construction of educational institutions. Team applications are accepted until May 23.

“The principle point is that joint groups must participate in the competition, in which at least one architect is from Ukraine and at least one is from outside its borders. When the acceptance of project ideas is completed, the jury, which includes architects from Lithuania, Ukraine and Scandinavian countries. However, in addition to architects, the jury includes experts from other fields: education, construction, safety requirements… In the middle of June, the laureates will be determined – those who won the first, second and third places A contract will be drawn up and signed with the winning group in July. It will start work – preparing the technical project of the “school of the future”, says Arturas Zharnovskis, head of “Co-create Future of Ukraine”.

The buildings will not be the same

Based on the technical project from “Future School for Ukraine”, new schools will be built in different regions of the country. However, this does not mean that all the premises of educational institutions will look the same, since the project must be adaptive.

“Adaptive is not a “typical project”, as was the case in Soviet times, when absolutely identical schools were built in Lithuania, Ukraine, and other parts of the USSR. The adaptability of the project is determined by the fact that it has a certain base, a technical “core” , which will be tied to a specific location every time. This way, it will not be necessary to design “from scratch” every time. First, it saves money, because a good technical project costs a lot,” says Mr. Zharnovskis.

In addition, the drawings of the buildings of the educational institutions will be developed by well-known architects. That is, Ukrainian schools should be sufficiently unique and creative.

Not only schools

If the project shows good results, the Lithuanians promise to help with the reconstruction of other civil infrastructure facilities. The construction of individual objects in the de-occupied areas has already been completed or is ongoing.

“Currently, we, Lithuanian institutions, are focusing on the field of education. We will remind you that we have already rebuilt a large school in Borodyanka, a kindergarten in Irpen. We are currently working on a large project in Mykolaiv Oblast and other regions that are close to the front and are constantly under fire. There shelter schools safe for wartime will be set up,” says Arturas Zharnovskis.
