Retail expansion: which regions of Ukraine are leading in terms of the number of new outlets

In the first nine months of 2024, the number of active stores of members of the Retailers Association of Ukraine (RAU) increased by 6.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching 22,073 outlets.
According to poll RAU, the total growth of retail trade facilities was 1,276 units: members of the association opened 1,925 new stores, while 649 outlets were closed for various reasons.
Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Odesa and Kharkiv regions became the leaders among the regions where the greatest growth of retail chains was observed.
In the Kyiv region, retailers opened 473 new stores and closed 145, bringing the total number of operating points to 5,266 by September 2024. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the number of stores increased by 120 units, and now there are 2,075 outlets.
In the Lviv region, the number of working shops grew to 1947, which is 68 more than last year, and in the Odesa region, the net increase was 57 points, reaching a total of 1,316. The Kharkiv region, despite regular shelling, also recorded an increase – by 20 shops to 1,215 .
In contrast, Donetsk, which remains affected by the war, recorded a reduction in retail outlets, with only 5 new stores opening, while 53 were closed.
This year, pharmacy retail was particularly active, increasing its share to 36% of the total number of retail outlets. Food retail occupies 21% of the domestic market, but it has decreased slightly against the background of the growth of the pharmacy chain.
Non-food retail covers 18% of the market, hardware and electronics stores – 9%, gas stations – 8%, jewelry stores – 4%, fashion retail – 3%, construction stores – 1%.
The RAU survey was conducted among 108 members of the association, which account for more than 80% of Ukrainian retail turnover.
