The USA will ban the supply of chips to the Russian Federation through China: mass media

Joe Biden’s administration has announced expanded export controls aimed at preventing shipments to Russia of semiconductors made with American technology or equipment, even if they come through third countries.

He writes about it Bloomberg.

This decision was made in response to Russia’s use of imported chips, mainly from China, for the production of military equipment, including missiles.

Details

  • New licensing requirements: Chip manufacturers and sellers will have to obtain licenses from the US Department of Commerce and prove that their products are not intended for military purposes.
  • Blacklist of companies: eight Hong Kong companies suspected of supplying chips to Russia will be blacklisted
  • Expanding sanctions: Restrictions will extend to enterprise software used in Russia, which will no longer be updated.

This decision is a continuation of the US policy of limiting Russia’s access to critical technologies. Previously, the US had already imposed sanctions on the direct export of semiconductors to Russia and limited the supply of relevant equipment to China.
