Ukraine urgently needs $5bn to rebuild its infrastructure: Kuleba

Ukraine has estimated its immediate recovery needs at $5 billion, and international support is needed to fulfill key tasks. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksiy Kuleba, informs Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories.

Priority tasks remain:

  • construction of a water pipeline from New Odesa to Mykolaiv.
  • preparation for the heating season, in particular energy independence of communities.
  • protection of energy infrastructure.
  • construction of housing for internally displaced persons.
  • restoration of damaged residential facilities.

Kuleba emphasized that the attraction of $5 billion will allow solving the most important tasks and emphasized the need for active participation of communities in restoration projects, as well as effective coordination of donor aid.

The agency noted that the 11th meeting of the Steering Committee of the Ukrainian Platform of Donors, which includes 23 countries and 7 international financial organizations, was held in Rome on October 9. The purpose of this platform is to coordinate international aid for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

In addition, Kuleba proposed the creation of an Advisory Group under the Recovery Agency to monitor and coordinate international aid.

It is also reported that Belgium has taken patronage over the restoration of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions and plans to allocate 150 million euros to the reconstruction of social and energy infrastructure. Switzerland is allocating 1.5 billion Swiss francs ($1.76 billion) to Ukraine over the next four years to support reconstruction projects.
