Ukrainian employers turn to labor migrants due to a shortage of workers

Ukrainian employers, especially in the construction industry, are increasingly forced to hire foreigners due to the acute shortage of qualified Ukrainian workers.

For data Confederation of Employers of Ukraine, the number of officially registered workers in the construction sector has decreased by almost a quarter over the past two years.

Employers see a way out of the situation in attracting labor migrants from countries such as Pakistan, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, African countries, Moldova and Uzbekistan. These workers are ready to work for a lower salary than Ukrainians. For example, handymen, car repairmen and other specialists from abroad agree to a salary of $450 per month, while Ukrainian specialists usually receive from $900.

Despite the additional costs associated with official employment and providing housing for foreign workers, employers consider this option more profitable in conditions of labor shortage.
