174 civilians died in Ukraine in May

Dmytro Lubinets, the parliamentary commissioner for human rights, called May the most deadly month. During the past month, 174 Ukrainian civilians died as a result of hostilities. Another 690 civilians were injured of various degrees of severity.

This is the highest number of civilian deaths in the last year – since June of last year. Residents of the Kharkiv region suffered the most from the Russian aggression, since the activation of the offensive of the Russian army in this direction fell precisely in May. In particular, more than 20 people died as a result of an attack by guided aerial bombs on a hypermarket in Kharkiv. Children were among the dead and wounded.

“The number of civilian casualties has increased by 31% compared to April 2024. This is due to increased Russian shelling in the Kharkiv region. They caused 53% of the total civilian casualties in May”, – reported Dmytro Lubinets.

As a result of hostilities, civilian infrastructure also suffers significant destruction: energy facilities, educational institutions, hospitals, residential buildings, etc.

“Russia continues to shell civilian infrastructure, which is also a gross and cynical violation of international humanitarian law! 65% of the damage and destruction of educational and health care facilities also occurs in the Kharkiv region. Russia’s impunity breeds new crimes on an ever-increasing scale! If the world shuts down if you look at it, the virus of evil will spread to new territories and destroy more and more lives.” – said the human rights commissioner.
