Russian oil imports to India hit historic high: Reuters

India’s Russian oil imports hit a record high in June 2026. Previously Reuters data showed that Indian refiners were buying about 2.7 million barrels of Russian oil per day, trying to offset the risks of supply disruptions due to the situation around the Strait of Hormuz.

Compared to May, the volume of imports has increased significantly. According to Kpler, India imported 2.13 million barrels of Russian oil per day at that time, and according to LSEG, it was 1.95 million barrels.

In June, Russian oil accounted for more than 50% of India’s total crude imports, while in May its share was 36.5%. At the same time, the country’s total crude oil imports remained almost unchanged at around 4.9 million barrels per day.

Russian oil has become the main source of supply for Indian refineries after European countries refused to purchase it in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The increase in imports in June is attributed to New Delhi’s desire to compensate for possible supply disruptions from Middle Eastern countries amid the worsening situation in the region.

Earlier, it was reported that India had appealed to the US to extend a special permit for the import of Russian oil in order to avoid fuel shortages and a sharp increase in prices on the domestic market.
