A member of the German far-right AfD party was fined for depicting a Nazi salute on a campaign poster

Vilko Möller, a member of the Brandenburg state parliament from the Alternative for Germany party, was fined 11,000 euros for depicting the Hitler salute on an election poster. This was reported by Die Welt.

The Frankfurt Regional Court found Wilko Möller guilty of using the symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The poster is for his 2024 election campaign.

It depicts a man and a woman raising their arms at a 45-degree angle, forming a kind of roof over three children sitting on a sofa. According to the prosecutor’s office, this gesture visually resembles a Nazi salute.

It is also noted that the prosecution requested a fine of 2,800 euros for the graphic designer who created the image, but the court ultimately acquitted him.

According to the investigation, Möller agreed to distribute the poster, although he knew about its similarity to the prohibited gesture. Initially, the Alternative for Germany tried to stop the proceedings, but in January the Brandenburg parliament by a majority vote refused to grant Möller immunity from prosecution.
