About 5,000 foreigners receive Czech citizenship every year, most of them Ukrainians

Every year, about 5,000 foreigners receive Czech citizenship, the publication says edition mukachevo.net. Most of them are Ukrainians (about 50%) and Slovaks.

The number of Russians seeking Czech passports has also increased significantly since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Last year, more than 1,100 Russians received Czech citizenship, which is twice as many as in 2022.

Acquisition of citizenship:

  • You can get Czech citizenship after 10 years of residence in the country. However, before that, it is necessary to pass exams in the Czech language, as well as an exam in the history and culture of the Czech Republic
  • Knowledge of the Czech language plays an important role in the process of obtaining citizenship. In addition to language skills, the presence of a steady income and the absence of criminal records are also taken into account.
  • Attention is paid to language skills, as well as to the presence of a permanent income and the absence of criminal records. The future citizen must pass a language test that assesses the level of Czech language proficiency: both spoken and written.

Four out of five candidates successfully pass the exams, but at the same time they have to prove their economic independence to the authorities.

Before submitting an application for citizenship, a person must confirm his income, tax payment, that he has not used the social security system in the last three years. At this point, it’s usually over.”, – noted the press secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Czech Republic Ondřej Kratoshka.
