British secret intelligence agency MI6 headed by a woman for the first time
British intelligence officer Blaise Metrevely became the first woman in history to head the MI6 secret service. Her appointment took place on June 15, informs british government
“I am delighted to appoint Blaise Metreveli as the next head of MI6. With a wealth of experience in our national security community, Blaise is the ideal candidate to lead MI6,” – said British Foreign Minister David Lammy.
The 47-year-old officer now heads the technical department and is known as ‘Q’, having previously held the position of director of MI5. After his appointment as head of the secret intelligence service, Metreveli will wear the designation “C”. She will begin her duties in the fall of 2025 after the resignation of the current head of intelligence, Richard Moore.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Metreveli’s appointment came at a time when the country was facing threats of “unprecedented scale”.
“I know Blaze will continue to provide the excellent leadership needed to protect our country.” – he emphasized.
Metreveli joined intelligence in 1999 as an operative. She spent most of her career in operational positions in the Middle East and Europe. She also studied anthropology at Pembroke College in Cambridge.
