Cameroon’s 92-year-old president re-elected for new seven-year term
92-year-old Cameroonian President Paul Biya has been re-elected for a new seven-year term. According to official results, he received 53.66% of the vote. Reuters reports this.
Biya held only one public rally during the campaign and spent ten days in Europe on a private visit.
The announcement of the results raised concerns about possible unrest among supporters of opposition candidate Issa Chirom Bakari, who claimed to be the real winner of the election. After the official results were released, Bakari said that civilians gathered near his home in the city of Garoua had been shot.
Last week, the country had already seen clashes between protesters and security forces after local media published partial results showing Biya in the lead. The opposition accused the authorities of fraud, but the government rejected these accusations.
