Child benefits in Poland are planned to be revised: what could change for Ukrainians
Ukrainian families who found refuge in Poland after the outbreak of the full-scale war should closely monitor decisions on social benefits, as child benefits have become part of the monthly budget for many. One of the key programs remains 800+, under which the state pays money for each child, but Poland is already discussing the possibility of changing the principle of calculating this support.
What is planned to change in Poland
As reported by Wirtualna Polska, the candidate for prime minister from the Law and Justice party, Przemysław Czarnek, proposed revising the 800+ program. He proposed to leave the payment for the first child at PLN 800, but to gradually increase the amount of assistance for the second, third and each subsequent child.
Under the current system, a family receives the same payment for each child, regardless of how many children are raised in the family. That is, the state pays PLN 800 per month for the first, second or third child. Czarnek’s idea involves a different approach, under which large families could receive more support.
The politician did not name specific amounts, so there is still no clear scale on which payments could be increased. It is also unknown whether such a model would apply to all recipients of the program, including foreigners, or only to certain categories of families.
Why there was talk of revising the program
Poland has been facing demographic problems for several years, so the topic of supporting families with children remains important for domestic policy. The 800+ program is seen as one of the instruments of such support, although Czarnek admitted that it is impossible to solve the demographic crisis with cash payments alone.
According to him, increasing assistance with each subsequent child could be an additional incentive for families planning to have more children. At the same time, he clarified that the voiced position is his personal opinion, and the party’s program team has not yet made a final decision.
This means that the proposal has not yet become an official legislative project. It may be discussed, changed, or not included in the future party program at all.
How 800+ works now
The 800+ program provides for a monthly payment per child of PLN 800. Families that meet the requirements of Polish law receive the money. Among the recipients are not only Polish citizens, but also foreigners, including Ukrainians with temporary protection.
For Ukrainian refugees, this assistance is of practical importance, as it partially covers the costs of food, clothing, education, transportation and daily needs of children. It is especially noticeable for mothers who are raising children on their own or do not yet have a stable job in Poland.
Payments are provided according to established rules, and their receipt is associated with the fulfillment of certain conditions. In recent years, Poland has tightened control over the allocation of assistance so that those families who are truly entitled to it receive funds.
How many children of foreigners does the program cover
In 2026, Ukrainians remain the largest group among foreign citizens who received assistance under the 800+ program. After them, citizens of Belarus, Romania, Russia and Vietnam were among the recipients.
At the same time, the number of foreign children for whom assistance was paid decreased. In 2025, the program covered 262.8 thousand children, while in the previous year this figure was 284.5 thousand.
This reduction is associated with several factors. Among them are more effective mechanisms for verifying the right to benefits and linking payments to compulsory school education. This means that the Polish system is gradually monitoring more accurately whether the child is actually in the country and whether he meets the conditions necessary to receive support.
What may change for Ukrainians
If the proposal for the new 800+ model begins to be considered at the official level, Ukrainian families with several children may be among those potentially affected by the changes. According to the proposed logic, families raising two, three or more children could receive higher payments.
However, at this stage there is no reason to talk about a guaranteed increase in benefits. The amounts, conditions, possible implementation dates and the range of recipients are not specified. There is also no decision by the Law and Justice party on including such a proposal in the official program.
For Ukrainians, the main thing is that the current system continues to operate according to the old rules. Families entitled to the payment receive PLN 800 for each child, and possible changes remain the subject of political discussion.
The 800+ program is important for a large number of families in Poland, so any statements about its revision immediately attract attention. For Polish families, this is a matter of supporting children and the family budget, and for Ukrainian refugees, it is also a matter of stability while living in another country.
Against the background of the gradual tightening of rules for foreigners, social benefits are increasingly being linked to actual residence in Poland, education of children and compliance with administrative requirements. Because of this, Ukrainian families should closely monitor official decisions, especially if they plan to stay in Poland for a long time.
What is known at this point
As of now, Przemysław Czarnek’s proposal is not a final decision. It envisages a possible change in the payment formula, under which PLN 800 would remain the basic amount for the first child, and the benefit for subsequent children could be higher.
Until the Polish authorities approve new rules, Ukrainian families with children continue to rely on the current model of the 800+ program. Further changes will depend on political decisions, discussions within parties, and the position of Polish state institutions.
