Crossing the border: what Ukrainians need to know to avoid problems

During the war, many Ukrainians are forced to leave their homes and seek safe places abroad. However, crossing the border can be accompanied by various difficulties, especially if you are transporting prohibited items. In order to avoid unpleasant situations, it is worth knowing what exactly is prohibited to transport. IA “FAKT” collected the main rules and restrictions established by the State Customs Service of Ukraine and the requirements of foreign services at the border.
Prohibited items and materials for export
Weapons and explosives
- Cold, pneumatic and firearms and their accessories.
- Explosives and gas canisters that are toxic and poisonous.
Household appliances and electronics
- Household appliances (more than one unit).
- Equipment with pornographic material or illegal software.
Natural resources and living organisms
- Minerals that are national property.
- Endangered species of plants and animals.
Cultural values
- Cultural monuments without appropriate permission.
- Works of art, cultural and historical values.
Prohibitions on food and alcohol
Food
- Fat and sausages.
- Cottage cheese, milk and fermented milk products.
- Fresh meat (more than 20 kg).
- Fish and sturgeon caviar (more than 125 g).
Alcohol and tobacco
- Hard alcoholic drinks – a maximum of one liter per person.
- Drinks with an alcohol content of less than 22.3% – a maximum of two liters per person.
- Beer – up to 16 liters, wine, except sparkling – up to four liters.
- Two open packs of cigarettes, cigars – a maximum of 10 pieces.
- Liquids for electronic cigarettes – up to 10 ml.
Medicines and chemicals
Medicines
- Medicines with narcotic or psychotropic substances, not intended for medical use.
- Strong medicinal drugs, if they do not have a doctor’s prescription.
- Medicines with a volume of more than 500 ml.
Other prohibitions
- Material that incites racism or violence.
- Radioactive, explosive and highly toxic substances.
- Canceled securities.
- Items that infringe intellectual property.
What cannot be imported into Ukraine
Ukrainian customs strictly controls the importation of certain items and materials to ensure safety and compliance with the law. Here is a list of the main prohibitions:

Medical requirements
- Vaccination certificates (depending on the country).
- Medical insurance covering a stay abroad.

- Evidence of financial capacity (bank statements, traveler’s checks, etc.).
Transportation bans
- Alcohol and tobacco products (quantity depends on the country).
- Medicines, if they do not comply with local regulations.
