Dispute between Zelensky and Trump in the White House: comments from world leaders and the media on the high-profile diplomatic incident

On February 28, 2025, a landmark meeting between the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the President of the United States Donald Trump took place in the White House in Washington. However, the event, which was supposed to be an important step in bilateral relations, turned into a high-profile diplomatic dispute that attracted the attention of the world and political leaders.

The main purpose of the meeting was to sign an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of extraction of critical minerals. However, instead of a productive dialogue, the conversation between the leaders turned into a public dispute. The tension in the conversation grew, and after exchanging harsh words, Zelensky left the White House early. As a result, the parties did not sign a mineral agreement.

Conflict during the meeting

The conflict began at the beginning of the conversation, when Trump remarked on the appearance of Zelensky, who did not come in a classic suit. Later, the dispute turned to more serious issues.

During a meeting at the White House, Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine “needs more than just a ceasefire” because “Putin has already violated it 25 times.” In response, Donald Trump said that if the parties conclude a peace agreement, the war will end.

“Russia will not want to go back to war, no one will want to go back,” Trump said.

He also reported that Washington “began to work out the parameters of the agreement” regarding the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In the final part of the 45-minute meeting between Zelenskyi, Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance, a verbal altercation took place. The videos show that Vance accused Zelensky of “disrespecting” the United States and Trump.

“Mr. President, with all due respect. I think it’s disrespectful to come to the Oval Office and argue publicly in front of the American media,” – said the vice president.

When Zelensky tried to object, Trump reacted sharply:

“You are not in the best position right now. You have no cards… You are playing with the lives of millions of people… You have no cards in your hands, you are running out of troops. You cannot tell us: ‘I don’t want to stop the war, I want this, I want that’. We are on the verge of the Third World, but you do not respect the United States.”

In response, Zelenskyi did not say that he does not play cards.

Trump then accused Zelensky of disrespecting the United States. According to him, the Ukrainian president has no right “to dictate to America what it should feel.”

During the discussion, he stated that Ukraine should agree to the settlement of the conflict.

“Can you act from a position of strength without the US? Your people are brave. But we have to make a deal. Either you agree to it or you leave it. I understand that it will be difficult, it will be painful. But you have no trump cards. When we sign the deal, your position will be stronger. But it is necessary to express gratitude. You don’t do that very well.”

“That’s not very good of you. Can’t you see that you have a problem? You’re short of people, short of men.” Vance supported Trump.

To which Zelensky replied that Vance could not know this, since he is “over the ocean”, and offered to come to Ukraine to see for himself.

Donald Trump’s reaction after the meeting

US President Donald Trump accused Volodymyr Zelenskyi of not seeking an end to the war. Appropriate statement Trump made to reporters after their argument in the Oval Office of the White House. The American leader noted that the United States wants to achieve peace, while Zelensky, according to him, is determined to “fight, fight, fight.” In addition, Trump believes that the Ukrainian president “overplayed” the situation, trying to maintain military support from the United States.

Trump emphasized that the war in Ukraine could have ended in two weeks if not for the supply of American weapons. He also mentioned Ukraine’s “debt” of $350 billion, although he did not specify what exactly he meant. At the same time, Trump did not explain under what conditions, in his opinion, the end of the war should take place. However, he said that he wants immediate peace and that Vladimir Putin also wants it. In his opinion, Zelensky should publicly declare his readiness for negotiations so that a peaceful settlement becomes possible.

Speaking about losses in the war, Trump said that “approximately 2,000 soldiers died this week – both Ukrainian and Russian.” He emphasized that he is worried about everyone, regardless of nationality:

“If someone asks why you worry about the military, Ukrainian and Russian, I worry about them. I worry about everyone.”

He also stated that Zelenskyi is negotiating with “very weak cards”, which, in his opinion, complicates his position in the conflict. Reporters asked Trump if he really told Zelensky to leave the White House. He gave an ambiguous answer to this:

“I won’t answer. I think you know.”

Donald Trump also wrote on his Truth Social social network:

“We had a very meaningful conversation today. We learned a lot that was impossible to understand without a dialogue with such tension and pressure. It’s amazing how much can be understood through such emotions, and I became convinced that President Zelensky is not ready for peace if the United States is involved, because in his opinion, our presence gives him a significant advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantages, I want peace. He showed disrespect inside the walls of the Oval Office. He can return when he is ready to peace”.

The reaction of US politicians

Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s meeting with Donald Trump in the White House and its scandalous conclusion caused a loud resonance in the political circles of the United States. Leading American politicians, Trump allies and influential public figures quickly reacted to the situation, expressing different positions on Zelensky’s behavior during the negotiations.

American billionaire Elon Musk, who is a close associate of Donald Trump, was one of the first to react to the situation. He harshly criticized Zelenskyi, accusing him of the failure of negotiations and deterioration of his image among American society.

“Zelensky destroyed himself in the eyes of the American people”, Musk wrote on his social network X.

Following Musk, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed his support for Trump. He thanked the president for his tough stance and stressed the importance of America continuing to stand up for its own national interests.

“Thank you, President Trump, for standing up for the American people and our nation on the world stage.” Bessent wrote on the X social network.

US Secretary of State Mark Rubio called on Volodymyr Zelenskyi to apologize for his behavior during the meeting.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who used to be one of the most outspoken supporters of supporting Ukraine, this time harshly condemned Zelensky’s behavior in the White House. He questioned whether Washington would be able to effectively cooperate with the Ukrainian leader in the future.

“This meeting was a complete disaster. I have never been more proud of Donald Trump than I am now.” Graham stated.

In his opinion, Zelensky’s behavior made it almost impossible for the American administration to justify its continued support to Ukraine to society.

“He made it difficult to argue that Ukraine is a good investment for the American people,” the senator added.

When Graham was asked if Zelensky should resign, he replied:

“He needs to either resign, or send someone we can work with, or change the way we work together.”

Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, also supported Trump’s position, saying that the American president put America’s national interests first in negotiations with Zelensky. He emphasized that only Trump is capable of mediating peace between Ukraine and Russia.

“The death and destruction caused by the war waged by Russia must be stopped immediately, and only our American president can lead these two countries to a path of lasting peace. President Zelensky should have recognized this and accepted the extraordinary mineral rights partnership proposal that President Trump has brought to the table.” Johnson wrote on the X social network.

At the same time, some American politicians supported Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

“Today, a hero and a coward met in the Oval Office. And when the meeting is over, the hero will return home, to Ukraine.” wrote California Senator Adam Schiff.

“Trump said US aid helped Zelensky and Ukraine (he used a little less diplomatic language); that’s true. But Trump didn’t. He and his GOP delayed a new aid package for 6 months (which cost many Ukrainians their lives). His vice president voted against it. Trump didn’t offer any new aid.” – noted former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.

Reaction to the incident in foreign media

The dispute between Zelenskyi and Trump instantly became the main topic of discussion in the international media. Leading publications described the event as a serious diplomatic failure. In particular, the headlines of the world mass media sounded as follows:

  • “Diplomacy is dying live”;
  • “Unconditional catastrophe that calls into question the future of Ukraine”;
  • “Diplomatic failure before the eyes of the whole world!”.

“The president felt disrespected, the officials in the hall also concluded that, in addition to the language barrier, which we already heard about, Zelenskyi’s body language, shrugging his shoulders and rolling his eyes looked like ingratitude and disrespect. The president believes that Zelenskyi is not ready for peace, and he can return when will be ready to talk about it, but now he is in a completely different position.” Fox News journalist Jackie Heinrich said on the air of the TV channel.

She also added that White House officials said the Ukrainian delegation “asked to restart negotiations,” but Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz said Zelenskyy should leave the White House and return when he is ready for peace talks.

CNN’s White House source reported, that after the public conflict, Trump held a closed-door meeting with his key advisers in the Oval Office while the Ukrainian delegation was in the next room. As a result, the US president came to the conclusion that Zelensky “is not in a position to negotiate.” He asked Rubio and Walz to inform the Ukrainian side that the negotiations are over.

“According to the representative of the White House, the Ukrainians protested and wanted to continue negotiations. But they were told “no”. Soon after that, Zelensky left the White House.” – reported the TV channel.
