Estonia announced the temporary closure of the airspace on the border with the Russian Federation
Estonia introduced a temporary ban on flights along the eastern border with Russia. This is reported by ERR.
According to the military, the reason for this decision was the activity of Russian troops and Ukrainian drones in the Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation. Restrictions will be in place for the coming weeks every day from 20:00 to 07:00 at an altitude of up to 6,000 meters.
“We are only limiting part of the air activity. This means that those who come to us and justify their actions, like the Department of Police and Border Protection last night when they searched for a missing person with a drone, – can continue working. We use this measure so that surveillance operators have fewer objects to track, – said the commander of the Estonian Air Force Riivo Valge.
According to him, it is too early to predict how long these restrictions will last. At the same time, they have already affected the operation of the Helsinki-Tartu flight. Defense forces emphasize that there is currently no direct military threat to Estonia, however, air incidents have increased in the region due to Russia’s military actions against Ukraine. Previously, similar no-fly zones were introduced by Finland and Latvia.
