Fakes and the truth about the status of “child of war”
In recent days, social networks, especially on the TikTok platform, have been actively spreading information about new payments to children of war. The video says that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has allegedly passed a law according to which the children of the war will receive a monthly allowance of 15,000 hryvnias. However, this information is not true and is another fake, as the Center for Combating Disinformation has repeatedly reported.
Fake about payments to children of war: what is known?
The fake messages are based on false information about the adoption of Law No. 4995, according to which, according to the authors of such videos, a child of war can receive financial assistance through the Diya portal. However, in reality, no legal act provides for such payments. As experts note, this information is completely unreliable, and such payments are not legally approved.
The Center for Combating Disinformation urges citizens to be vigilant and check information, especially in wartime, when numerous fakes are spreading against the backdrop of anxiety and fear.
Who can get the status of “child of war” in 2024?
In Ukraine, the status of “child of war” does exist, but its official name is “a child who suffered as a result of hostilities and armed conflicts.” This status is regulated by Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 268. The right to such status is available to children who, during the war or as a result of hostilities, have suffered the following:
- Physical violence or physical injuries that led to deterioration of health.
- Sexual violence.
- Illegal deportation or abduction from Ukraine.
- Involvement in military operations.
- Detention in captivity.
- Psychological violence, moral and psychological suffering.
All these facts must be documented, except for psychological injuries, which do not require proof. According to Yury Kalinovskyi, head of the Sumy Regional Service for Children, every child in Ukraine, especially in the frontline areas, experiences psychological violence, and this is obvious.
How to issue the status of “child of war”?
The status of “child of war” can be obtained even after reaching the age of majority, if the person was a minor at the time of February 24, 2022. This status can also be obtained by the children of displaced persons, since their forced abandonment of their homes is a psychological trauma.
You can apply for status at the children’s service at your place of residence, and for families staying abroad, you need to send the documents by mail to the appropriate service in Ukraine.
Are there provisions for payments to children of war?
Currently, there are no provisions in the legislation of Ukraine on monetary payments to children who have received the status of “child of war”. It is not yet known whether such payments will be introduced in the future. At the same time, the status of a child of war gives the right to a number of benefits, including free meals in schools. Perhaps in the future this list of privileges will be expanded, but currently no financial support is provided.
It is important to emphasize that any information about new benefits should be carefully verified, as spreading false information only harms society and can create false expectations among those who actually need support.
