Former Google executive Matt Brittin to become BBC’s new director general after Trump speech scandal
The BBC has officially announced the appointment of former Google top manager Matt Brittin as its new CEO. This is reported by Reuters.
He will replace Tim Davey, who resigned last year after a scandal involving the manipulative editing of US President Donald Trump’s speech.
BBC Chairman Samir Shah said there was a need for deep changes in the broadcaster’s structure and stressed that Brittin was the right person to transform the company in the face of unprecedented challenges.
The appointment of the new head came against the backdrop of a legal Donald Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit. The US president is accusing the British broadcaster of defamation for editing footage of his speech on January 6, 2021.
In addition to legal pressure, the BBC is also facing a sharp decline in reach among younger audiences, who are increasingly preferring digital platforms and streaming services over traditional television.
