French Foreign Minister rejects Russia’s return to G7
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barro said that it is currently “impossible to imagine” Russia’s return to the Group of Seven (G7). About this informs Le Figaro.
The French minister emphasized that Russia “is not a developed democracy”, so its return to the G7 is currently unacceptable.
“Russia is behaving less and less like a democracy, it is attacking other G7 members shamelessly and unhindered, so this is unacceptable.” Barro noted.
At the same time, he did not rule out that if a “just and lasting peace” is achieved after the end of the war in Ukraine, the issue of Russia’s return to the G7 may be reconsidered.
“In the future – why not? The responsibility for this war against Ukraine lies on Putin’s shoulders, the Russian people did not start this war. If, after we create the conditions for a just and lasting peace, we manage to restore interaction with the Russian people, other diplomatic relations are possible.”, – added the French Foreign Minister.
It will be recalled that Donald Trump previously spoke in favor of Russia’s return to the G7, calling its exclusion a “mistake” made by the administration of Barack Obama. The Russian Federation was excluded from the G7 (then still G8) in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in eastern Ukraine.
