Hungary directs Peace Fund funds to Chad, not Ukraine: Sijarto

Budapest decided to direct its share of funds from the European Peace Fund to support the defense of Chad, and not to aid Ukraine. About this stated Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Sijarto at a press conference on September 9.

Szijjarto announced that Hungary will provide 14 million euros to strengthen Chad’s security, including the creation of a new academy to train army officers and improve the capabilities of the African country’s armed forces. He emphasized that this decision was made on the basis of the Hungarian position on the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. Hungary decided not to use these funds to finance weapons that could be sent to Ukraine, as it advocates a diplomatic way to resolve the war.

Also, during the visit of the delegation from Chad, led by President Mahamat Deby, several important agreements were signed between the countries, in particular in the areas of combating illegal migration, defense and agricultural development.

The European Peace Fund, created by the European Union, aims to strengthen international security and stability, in particular by financing military aid to countries facing conflicts. In the context of Ukraine, this fund has been an important source of support, ensuring the supply of weapons and other resources in response to Russian aggression.

It is noteworthy that on July 2, 2024, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visited Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, offering a ceasefire for negotiations. However, a few days later, on July 5, Orbán went to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin, after which Zelensky rejected the possibility of Hungary’s participation as a mediator in the settlement of the conflict.
