Igor Koval became the acting mayor of Odessa
On October 16, the temporary performance of the duties of the mayor of Odessa was entrusted to the secretary of the city council, Ihor Koval. The corresponding order was published on the website of the Odessa City Council.
Ihor Koval became the successor of Gennady Trukhanov, whom the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky deprived of citizenship due to his holding a Russian passport.
The document states that the decision was made on the basis of part two of Article 42 of the Law of Ukraine “On Local Self-Government in Ukraine”, according to which in the event of early termination of the powers or absence of the mayor, his functions are performed by the secretary of the city council.
Ihor Koval was born on February 27, 1955 in Odessa. He is the former rector of the Odessa National University named after Mechnikov, a scientist. In 2020, he became a deputy of the Odessa City Council from the “Servant of the People” party and was elected secretary of the city council. In 2015, he ran for the city council from the “Petro Poroshenko Bloc” (now – “European Solidarity”), but without success.
As a reminder, on October 14, the SBU confirmed that Gennady Trukhanov had lost Ukrainian citizenship due to having Russian citizenship and a valid Russian passport.
On October 15, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky appointed the head of the Dnipropetrovsk Military District, Serhiy Lysak, as the head of the Odessa City Military Administration.
