Iran rejects U.S. demands for nuclear program and puts forward its own

Tehran rejected Washington’s demands for a nuclear program during a recent visit by US special envoy Steve Witkoff to Iran, while putting forward its own conditions. About this informs Tehran Times.

The negotiations started at the residence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, who acted as a mediator. In total, fewer than ten written messages were exchanged between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Steve Witkoff.

In his appeals, Aragchi noted that Tehran joined the indirect negotiations in order to test the “sincerity” of the American side. At the same time, he emphasized that Iran is not going to curtail its nuclear program. Instead, the state plans to take measures that guarantee its non-militarized character, and the IAEA will remain the only external structure that will have access to the country’s nuclear facilities.

Also, Tehran insists on the lifting of sanctions in a number of sectors, stressing that the US should not be able to reimpose them under another pretext. Aragchi added that an agreed framework agreement is needed to continue the dialogue. “If the US objects to the framework proposed by Iran in the first session, it should present its own alternative for Iran’s consideration.”

It will be recalled that during the second presidential term, Donald Trump attempted to initiate a new nuclear agreement with Iran, addressing the proposal directly to the supreme leader of the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the message, Trump, in particular, warned Tehran about the possibility of “bombing” in case of refusal to cooperate. The first round of indirect negotiations took place on April 12.
